What is this course all about?  What will I learn in this course?

I like to call it a “Technology for Teachers” course.  I will show you how to use some of the more advanced features of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create tools you can use in your current or future educational pursuits.  We will also design basic websites.

I already know how to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.  Will there be anything for me to learn from this course?

Absolutely.  This class is not a “how-to” for Word or PowerPoint.  In fact, prior knowledge of and experience with those programs is preferred.  Everything is set in the context of teaching, so we will design documents and presentations that are useful for educators.

I have very little computer experience.  Will this course help me?

No.  Students should possess basic computer, Internet, word processing, and PowerPoint skills before taking this course.  Students with very little or no computer experience should consider first taking CIT-100, Introduction to Computers.

Are there tests?

No.  This course is project-based, meaning you show what you learn, rather than tell what you’ve learned.

What hardware/software do I need?

At the very least, students must have Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.  Click here for hardware and other technical requirements for all CCAC Distance Learning courses.

Are Internet courses easier than traditional classroom courses?

Not necessarily.  In fact, many students have commented that they felt their Internet courses were actually harder than their traditional classroom courses and that they put a great deal more time into their Internet course work.  You must have excellent time-management skills in order to succeed in this class.  The advantage to taking this course online is that you can read and complete the assignments when it’s convenient for you.

Do I have to be online at a certain time on a certain day?

No.  I may occasionally schedule an online chat that would take place on a certain day at a certain time, but they will always be optional.  I realize that the primary reason you may choose to take this course as an Internet course is because you can not often commit to being in a certain place at a certain time due to work or family responsibilities.

Can I complete my assignments on my work computer?

As long as your employer doesn’t mind, neither do I!  ;-)  Just be aware of when assignments are due and turn them in on time.  Also, be sure your work computer has all the necessary technical requirements.

How long is the course?  When does it begin and end?

All Distance Learning courses follow a semester schedule that coincides with the College Center schedules.  During the Spring and Fall semesters, Distance Learning courses begin 2 weeks after traditional classroom courses begin.  All Distance Learning summer courses take place in the 10-week First Summer Session.

How much time should I expect to spend working on this course?

The general rule of thumb for all college courses is that you should expect to devote 1.5 hours per week per credit hour of each course to studying for that course.  So, it would not be unreasonable to expect to spend at least 4.5 hours per week studying for this 3-credit course.  Completing assignments may require additional time.

Is there a textbook that I need to buy?

No.  All materials will be available to download and/or print in the Blackboard course site.
