A course for non-Administrative Office Professional majors.  Emphasis is on learning to touch type the alphanumeric keyboard on a microcomputer and to practice applications which are typical of those found in business.

Course Objectives:

 

1.         Students will demonstrate the correct "touch" method for operating alphanumeric and symbol keys.

 

2.         Students will demonstrate the correct "touch" method for operating the ten-key pad.

 

3.         Students will demonstrate a straight copy speed of 15-30 words per minute.

 

4.         Students will demonstrate the ability to enter information from straight copy and rough-draft text.

 

5.         Students will demonstrate the ability to proofread both alphabetic and numeric data.

 

6.         Students will demonstrate the ability to follow oral and written directions.

 

7.         Students will demonstrate the ability to compose text at the keyboard.
 

                                                                                                                                                                                   

 

8.         Students will be introduced to Word in the second half of the semester.

 

9.         Students will be able to create letters, memos, and manuscripts using Word.

Required Text(s):          Keyboarding and Word Processing  Lessons 1-60, Van Huss, Duncan, Forde and Woo, South-Western Educational Publishing Company, (International Thomson Publishing) 2004.

 

Required Materials:                               3.5" High Density Disk

 

Directed Study:             Open Lab, Tutoring, etc.

 

Evaluation Plan:

 

Midterm Grade - This grade will be based on the completion of approximately 25 lessons of the College Keyboarding--Keyboarding Pro Software, textbook.  Your grade will be dropped one letter for each set of three lessons that you are behind. 

 

Final Grade - The final grade will be based on the completion of the 30 lessons and the following:

 

Final Grade – The final grade will be based on the following:

 

            50% - Classroom assignments and production work*

            25% - Production tests

            25% - Final Examination

 

            Note:  No makeup tests will be scheduled unless arrangements have been made with the instructor prior to the test date.  You will automatically drop one letter grade when making up a test.

 

            *Final Grade will be dropped one letter grade if the first 25 lessons of the keyboarding package have not been completed.

 

Other Policies and Procedures:

 

Your Keyboarding class meets two times per week.  You will be expected to complete three lessons per week.  If you personally need two class periods in order to complete one lesson to your personal satisfaction, you must come to the lab during OPEN LAB TIME in order to complete the lessons at the rate of three lessons per week

 


 

Attendance Policy:

 

            If you miss more than 4 classes (TH), you automatically drop one letter grade.  If you miss more than 8 classes (TH), you may fail the course.  In other words, try not to miss any classes.

 

It is up to each student to make up any coursework missed by going to the Computer Suite on the fifth floor of the Library Building.

 

·        During the semester/session, reasonable changes to the course outline may be academically appropriate; however, students will be notified of these adjustments in a timely manner.
